Cam-u-flage 2.1 approved (and on a side note...)

Cam-u-flage 2.1 has been approved on the AppStore! Go get it now!

I have received early emails from people having troubles with the custom background image selection which I have been able to reproduce. I already fixed them and submitted 2.1.1 to be reviewed. I also filed a request for Apple to prioritize this review that contains this critical bugfix which I hope they will acknowledge and release sooner than 7 days. The bug only applies to the iPhone version, and works perfectly on the iPad.

Sorry to everyone expecting this much requested feature. The fix on the way!

Version 2.1 submitted to the AppStore

I’m glad to tell you that I have just uploaded the latest version 2.1 to the AppStore.
Expect it to be ready to download in 10 days or less when Apple approves it.

Here’s a summary of the things that changed.
If your feedback isn’t on this list, do not hesitate to email me right away.

Version 2.1 - contains the following improvements over the latest version:

Ability to select your custom image as a background image. Thanks to everybody who submitted feedback. It was never the intention to remove this awesome and much needed feature, but I needed to release 2.0 before finishing it.
Much faster saving process
Image saving queue counter replaces the 2.0 image taking counter. Now you can know again how many pictures are still pending to be saved to the Camera Roll.
You can now choose to always show the image saving queue counter even though the controls might be out of sight
Controls do not reappear every time you open the app, they show only the first time.
Video recording now has audio
EXIF information is properly saved to the image
Vibrate option works as expected

Cam-u-flage with iOS 4.1

I have had several reports in the last couple of days about Cam-u-flage not recording videos in HD. Seems Apple has chabged the default setting for video recording from HD to a low resolution one.

I cannot blaim Apple for this. I should have set the video camera to the higgest resolution possible, even if it was the default.

I’m working on an update to fix this. Please bare with me while I do it.

Also many people seem unhappy about the icons staying on screen when shooting. I have an idea of how to remove them and still be able to access them when needed. Simply with a swipe. I’m working on it too.

The truth is I’m the only who can keep the app going forward. I love adding features, helping you achieve the best with it, and also to assist and listen to everything you tell me about it. I have other projects going on, and I don’t have as much time as I would like to fix these issues quickly. Don’t get mad. Not all of us who sell in the AppStore are big companies in the position to have many developers working on apps. Having said that, I always answer every mail sent to me with complains, reports, doubts, suggestions and whatevers. I hope you appreciate that, and just wait a bit while I make Cam-u-flage better and better.

I’ve made the app a Universal App, for you to use on your iPad as well.

Minor fixes have been also made into the app, and iOS 4 Compatibility.

I wanted to let you all know that Cam-u-flage 1.3 has been approved and it’s now ready to download on the AppStore.
Here’s a list of everything new, I think you are going to like the new features:

NEW FEATURES
- VIDEO RECORDING ON iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4!!
- TIMED SHOOTING ON every iPhone!! (allows you to take a picture automatically every 5 seconds!)

Try the new modes (Single Shoot, Timed Shoot, Video Shoot) by taping the icon next to the Settings icon to switch through them. Tap to begin timed shooting / video shooting, and tap again to finish. The icon should blink while active.

Other features
- Full iOS 4 Compatibility!
- Fixed problem with scrolling on Settings on iOS 4.
- Only on iPhone 4: Flash should now be always off.

The new version of Touch & Copy Character has just been approved by Apple!
I believe it’s going to available for update in a couple of hours.

New feature added: An option to delete individual Favorite Icons. Just tap and hold on any of them to be asked for confirmation on removal on any of them (only on Favorites Tab).

Fixed: Landscape Mode got broken in version 1.2, sorry about that.

Cam-u-flage tips

Since the release of the 1.1 update Cam-u-flage allow you to choose your own picture to stay on top while taking undercover pictures.

This is a great feature if you don’t like my excellent presets… but it’s also an oportunity to really camouflage your photo-taking. Why? Because you can take screenshots of your iPhone and use them!

If you are new to iPhone you may not know this hidden feature on iPhone OS. You can take screenshots of any application, anytime, very easily. Just hold the Home button and the lock button together for a couple of seconds and then release them together. You should see a white flash and the camera shutter sound. Then you can go to the Photos app to see the screenshot.

It’s obvious what are the best choices for screenshots: your springboard home page, the Messages app, the Mail app or just any game you like. Ha! People won’t understand what’s going on! Just enable the full camouflage toolbar and take pictures in full undercover!!

I want to let you all know about the latest FAQs you are all making on Cam-u-flage v1.1. I see a lot of great suggestions and questions coming from reviews and mails, so this are the answers if you are still wandering:

About the camera shutter sound

The iPhone camera makes a sound like a real camera when taking a picture. This sound is impossible for me to remove because of Apple’s limitations to developers. When you think about it, it’s quite alright for the sound to be on all the time, so you can know when a picture is being taken on a certain app. Of course, not quite what we need for our purposes of taking camouflaged pictures right? But, a limitation is indeed there. And I cannot get rid of it. You will have to mute your phone with the provided switch on the side of the phone to avoid the camera shutter sound. As soon as this stops being a limitation, I will update for sure.
PS: To Apple: you can just make rid of this by making a simple question to the user about the need of using the camera, just like GPS does. So users can allow or not the use of the camera in applications as they see fit. :)

I own an iPhone 3GS, I love my video camera and I need it cam-u-flaged!

So do I !!! Wouldn’t that be just GREAT? But, again, another Apple limitation. The new iPhone 3.1 firmware allowed Cam-u-flage to exist. Prior to that, an application could not do what I do now with still pictures. Video is still not available for third parties. You will have to use the built-in camera app to record your videos. But again, as soon as Apple lets me, Cam-u-flage will record video.

About the slow saving time on photos taken

You may or not have noticed that Cam-u-flage does not save the pictures taken right away, just like the built-in camera application does. This is a bit strange, but it’s not Cam-u-flage’s fault. I have indeed reported this bug to Apple, as it takes 5-10 seconds to record a single photo to the phone’s memory, and that is VERY slow. Hopefully this will auto-fix with future iPhone firmware releases.

That’s about it for now. These are the most common questions I receive via email or reviews. I really do appreciate your feedback, so keep it coming!!

Hope this helps to understand a bit what can and cannot be done with present iPhone hardware and software.

The new blog is ready. At last http://blog.sebastianarena.net is running!

The new updated site is uploaded to add the “blog magic” to it’s current beautiful layout.

I’m very happy to have this finally installed, and be able to share with all of you.

I’m going to use this blog to keep you all posted about the latest news on my applications. Specially about upcoming apps, or updates to the existing ones.

Of course, this new blog is all about having feedback on my work from you! You’ll find a public comment section on each post that I hope you will use it wisely to contact me and also sharing among yourselves some cool things regarding the apps. I have received a lot of positive reviews on my apps, with some GREAT ideas on how to use them, I hope this new channel will increase those ideas so we can all benefit from them! Keep them coming!
